Production Budget guide

A practical guide to animation production scope and budgeting

Every CGI and animation project differs significantly in scope, complexity, rendering requirements, production time, and technical demands.

The calculator below is designed to provide an early-stage ballpark production estimate based on a range of common project variables. It is intended as a practical budgeting guide rather than a fixed quotation system.

Because all Studio Mitchell projects are developed on a bespoke basis, final production costs may vary depending on technical complexity, project structure, revision requirements, rendering demands, and delivery specifications.

The guide below outlines some of the key factors that influence production scope and overall animation cost.

1. What Affects Your Quote?

  • Advanced Technical Visualisation:
Our highest-complexity work, including engineering, scientific, medical and internal-mechanism visualisation. These projects often involve detailed interpretation, CAD integration, complex modelling, specialist materials and technically demanding animation.

  • Technical 3D:
Technical storytelling, product systems, industrial processes, incident reconstruction and other work where the subject requires a higher level of interpretation than standard product animation.

  • Standard 3D Animation:
Product CGI, marketing animation and visual storytelling where the emphasis is on design, movement, presentation and finish rather than complex technical interpretation.

  • 2D Motion Graphics:
Charts, animated text, diagrams, overlays and other graphic elements. These are priced separately from 3D production.

2. Project Duration and Structure

The final budget is influenced by both the amount of finished animation and how efficiently production assets can be reused across the project.

  • Animation Length:
Short, technically intensive films can carry a high production value because most of the modelling, look development and setup work is concentrated into a small runtime. Longer films benefit from efficiencies once environments, models, materials and production systems are established, so costs do not rise in direct proportion to duration.
  • Number of Scenes:
Each distinct scene can require its own lighting, camera setup, staging and compositing. Projects with 4–6 scenes carry a +20% scene-complexity allowance, while 7+ scenes carry +45%.

3. Intricate Design and Movement

This refers to how much detail, movement, and intricate design goes into your video. Complexity can go from basic shapes to intricate custom 3D modeling, realistic textures, detailed lighting, and high-quality rendering. More characters, detailed environments, and bespoke elements all add to the complexity and therefore the production time.

4. Animation Revisions

A standard number of review and revision stages is included within the agreed project scope. Significant changes requested late in the production process, or extensive additional revisions beyond the agreed scope, may incur extra costs. Clear communication and feedback during each stage help keep your project on track and budget.

Technical Visualisation Projects

Projects involving scientific visualisation, internal systems, engineering cutaways, fluid simulation, or highly specialised technical processes often require significantly more production development than standard product or broadcast CGI.

Where projects involve advanced technical interpretation, simulation, CAD integration, or complex engineering visualisation, Studio Mitchell recommends an initial discussion to establish a more accurate production scope and technical workflow from the outset.
