Let’s take a look at the main areas to consider in your 2D / 3D animation quote:

  1. Animation style
  2. Animation length
  3. Animation complexity
  4. Animation Revisions

There are also content options for you to consider when budgeting your project. These can raise the overall quality and presentation of an animated video.

These include:

  1. Professional scriptwriting
  2. Storyboard
  3. Voiceover / Narration
  4. Royalty Free Licensed music
  5. Royalty Free Licensed Video Footage
  6. Multiple languages, subtitles
  7. Delivery options – different video outputs (i.e. 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1) tailored for social media output.

The starting point with your project is the  style of animation.  This sets the stage for your production and is an important consideration when determining cost. The more time consuming and refined the animation, the more expensive it is going to be. Here’s what you need to know:

Animation Style

3D Animation

3D animation is a very evocative style of film. The good news is that through the advancement in technology and accessibility to this method of animation production, the costs have reduced. Simple product renderings for explainer videos are less expensive and even character models and Disney/Pixar style 3D animation are also achievable on a larger budget. The price to produce an animated 3D video can range anywhere from £2500 – £10,000+ depending on its complexity and length.

3D animation complexity ranges from simple 3D shapes to off the shelf purchased stock models through to custom 3D modeling and a photorealistic rendering. The Robot example above demonstrates the wireframe polygon model and the final photorealistic studio lit render.

3D animation lends itself perfectly to product sales presentations and explainer videos. We can produce photorealistic videos without the need for camera crews, costly studios and lighting.  We are often asked to create animation for products which haven’t been manufactured. This aids our clients in getting to market much quicker without the need for prototypes.

Another consideration is the setting or environment. Studio Mitchell can create natural or hyperthetical environments which can be photorealistically rendered or in a style of your choice.

2D Animation

2D animation is generally going to be the most affordable style of animation offered. It’s less time consuming than 3D animation. Within 2D animation, typography and graphic vector style is more affordable, while shaded or character hand-inked animation is more costly.

Motion Graphics 2D Animation - responsive by Studio Mitchell

Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly. This style is often used to help break down big data and make it more easily understood. Financial institutions and government agencies are often a fan of this style of work.

Motion Graphics (Typography and Animated Logos). This style can be both 2D and 3D, and you’ll see examples everywhere in commercials, explainer videos, sporting events, the news and other TV productions. Character animation is generally outside the scope of motion graphics, but many of the core animation principles apply to motion graphics too.

Animation Length

What Impact Does The Length Of Animation Time Have On Your Choice Of Delivery

Facebook has a several different types of video options available to you to share your 3D product presentation. For example, Facebook livestreams can be as long as 8 hours. Facebook states that most people will watch videos to the end if they are 15 seconds long. One study found that if you want higher engagement, 2 to 5 minutes is the time range to aim for.

Both Facebook and Instagram have Story videos available for your 3D product presentation. Instagram Stories and Reels are a maximum of 15 seconds, feed videos are 60 seconds and IGTV videos, 60 minutes. Instagram feed videos are recommended at 26 seconds.

Twitter’s video length is 140 seconds maximum but they recommend videos to be 15 seconds or less. According to Twitter’s data, Tweets with video had 10x more engagement than without video.

The maximum length for LinkedIn videos is 10 minutes that a lot for a 3D product presentation. For brand awareness and consideration, LinkedIn says that a video under 30 seconds has a 200% increase in completion rates.

It’s practically impossible to open up a major social platform now and not see a video post. 3D product presentation videos range from zippy promotional videos on Instagram to quick trailers on Twitter and  longer livestreams on Facebook. Videos encompass a wide range of topics and are the preferred media digested by many people around the world. In 2020, 96% of consumers increased their online video consumption, and 9 out of 10 viewers reported that they wanted to see more videos from brands and businesses. In fact, as of 2021, an average person is predicted to spend 100 minutes per day watching online videos.

Why Animation Length Directly Affects The Animation Price

The length of your video has a significant impact on the final animation price. Keep in mind that most animation studio projects are priced by the second. The longer your video, the more expensive it will become. The shorter it is, the less expensive it will be.

Additionally to the length of your video, another factor that can impact animation cost and your budget is your timeline or expected deadline. The tighter your requested turnaround, the more expensive your video can become—especially if you need the animation studio to rush the project faster than their typical turnaround time.

Script and Storyboard

Why is the script  / storyboard an additional cost?

Concepting & Strategy. Do you have an idea for your video already, or will you be relying on the animation studio to produce the concept and strategy for your project? This is your script and storyboard.

The storyboard is a very important part of the pre-production process because it clearly conveys how the story / script will flow, you will see visual interpretations of how your scenes / shots work together. It also allows you to see potential problems that could not go unnoticed, ultimately saving you time and money. Storyboarding can be a resource-intensive task requiring the involvement of a creative director, concept artist, and illustrator.

Can I supply my own script?

Most certainly we often work on projects with supplied scripts and this works well. You know your product or services the best and we can certainly work on your animated video using your script.

Professional Narration

What is a voiceover and why do I need it?

Professional voice talent and recording will add to your video cost, but it also has the potential to transform it. An experienced voice artist can adapt the power, timbre and tone of their voice to fit the subject, and enrich the experience of the viewer by bringing out empathy and persuasion.

Of course, you always want to ensure your videos will also feature high quality audio. Many voice actors now have their own home studio facilities, with sufficient sound dampening, a well-chosen microphone and audio interface, the necessary software, and the knowledge of how to edit and bring out the best quality sound. It is not a sound that can be reproduced from one’s own office.

Can I supply my own Voiceover?

If you have access to a recording studio and voiceover talent, certainly you can. We do however recommend not using amateur recordings due to possible low quality issues.

Why should I add subtitles to video?

It is good practice to add subtitles to your animated videos, especially if you’re planning to post them on social media. You can also benefit from a significant boost in your animated video engagement. Having your message in both audio and text can help ensure that your message can be heard (and read) clearly by everyone.

Can I have foreign language translations?

Yes, subtitling a foreign language allows viewers to listen to the way people communicate, in their native tongue. Dubbing gives them a different version of the same video. The message may be the same, but part of the non-verbal communication is lost. Utilising one language with foreign language subtitles is also more cost effective.

The Benefits of Using Subtitles
  • Watching videos in sound-sensitive environments
  • Providing clarity
  • Maintaining focus
  • Following the storyline
  • Aiding comprehension
  • Adding a different language

Licensed Stock Media

Can I use royalty free stock music

Creating custom soundtracks or purchasing rights to music can be costly. If you’re hoping to save money, ask your animation studio about your stock music and sound effect options. We can suggest royalty free music sites, where you can purchase at a small fee the license to whatever track it is you want. This makes you (the licensee) free to use the music in your animated video, but the company you purchased the license from is actually paying the royalties to the composers.

Can I use royalty free stock film / video footage

Yes you most certainly can. Sometimes there is the requirement for stock footage and there is a wealth of go-too material to choose from now. “Royalty free” simply means that a piece of footage is free from royalties, meaning that it is free from ongoing payments.
